Recent study: Tanning beds are carcinogens
Pools have shut down for the season, temperatures of 100 degrees have mostly subsided, and residents of our hot-climatic Valley still want their summer tans. How do they get them? They tan outside in cool weather or pay the packaged-fee to use a tanning bed.
Here at Stockton Dermatology we would like to warn you, as our patient, against such UV exposure and relay some very important information that was published this past July by The Lancet Oncology with findings from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) regarding UVA and UVB exposure from the beds.
Prior to the July 2009 findings, tanning beds were ‘probable carcinogen producers.’ Now, however, the most recent findings warn users that the beds are in fact ‘carcinogen producers’ meaning they are definite cancer-causing mechanisms.
According to the study, tanning beds raise the risk of melanoma (the most severe type of skin cancer) by 75 percent in those who use the beds before the age of 30. There was also a link found between tanning beds and melanoma in the eye.
We advise that in a state where sunshine is plenty and tans remain stylish, that you remember these findings and think again before spending time in UVA and UVB environments.

FDA approved alternative to BOTOX®
Look out BOTOX®! For the first time there is a new FDA approved neuromuscular blocking agent on the market.
Dysport™ (abobotulinumtoxinA) created by Medicis, is now available at Stockton Dermatology and is being widely used as an alternative to pricey BOTOX® injections.
The good news for consumers is BOTOX® now has a direct competitor, and when the market has two similar products to offer patients, typically there is a price war and costs for these treatments drop.
Schedule your appointment today to learn more about the differences between BOTOX® and Dysport™ and discuss the potential benefits of using this exciting new alternative.
